Our History

1890

A community called Fontana was established on the site, marking the beginning of settlement in this part of Harrison County.

1891

The Paris, Marshall and Sabine Railroad was built through the area, connecting the community to broader Texas markets.

1892

Fontana had grown to 175 inhabitants with Baptist and Methodist churches, a steam sawmill, gin and gristmill, two general stores, and a newspaper called The Journal. The community was renamed Harleton after J.W. Harle, a sawmill operator who built a tram railroad from Marshall.

1900

Harleton's population reached 238 inhabitants, establishing itself as a growing East Texas settlement.

1920s-30s

The community flourished with an estimated population of 360 residents during this period.

1941
